Political action is not all that common for Lee and me. In Summer 2008, however, we decided to help develop the Web site for Jim Bryan, a candidate we thought could make a difference on the principle issues we believe need addressing. This site is very much a team project. William M. Sloan and Jim Bryan were responsible for and did the most work on completing the "issue statements" that outline the principle directions Jim will take after he is elected. Lee used her policy-making background and communication skills to assist them and perform final copy editing. Hugh coded the site.

The Website

To the Democratic National Committee. Written by William M. Sloan.

One indication of the quality of Mr. Bryans campaign is that the organizers of the Democratic National Convention asked permission to show his web site at the Convention. Now, the Library of Congress has asked to use his site in its collection. (They do not collect all sites.)

The candidate

Since Jim Bryan was raised as a farm boy, he has a good understanding of agricultural issues. As a highly decorated Vietnam veteran—a paratrooper who went on to a military career—he is deeply concerned about the preemptive war in Iraq and its damaging impact on future foreign policy, our economy, and our military. Jim also has a good grasp of the economic, trade, and business issues facing the country: he studied technology, business, statistics, and accounting at the college level, and he started up and ran his own trucking business for 10 years. Jim's top priorities as a U.S. Congressman are listed below.

  • Responsive, straightforward representation of all District 1 constituents
  • Economic development, paying jobs, and clean industry for Northwest Florida
  • Rejuvenation of Florida's Panhandle agriculture
  • Bringing our troops home from Iraq without endangering them
  • A strong military sent to war only when truly required for the national defense
  • Fair and honorable treatment of our veterans
  • High-quality health care that is affordable, portable, and accessible
  • A clean environment
  • Energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, and independence from foreign oil
  • Quality education from pre-K through post-PhD
  • Swift, impartial justice for all of our citizens
  • Restoration of the civil liberties that have been usurped since 2001
