Introducing Web Poynor

Welcome to Web Poynor. We have been developing software for business, government, and education for 40 years. Since 1999, we have concentrated on developing data-based Web solutions.

What we do

We create custom Web site projects, providing a full range of e-Commerce, database, content development, and graphic services. Our sites attract attention, add value, and set our customer's messages apart from their competition.

How we do it

We have the skills, the technical solutions and experience to create an effective site that meets your unique needs. Unlike many developers, we work from your requirements forward, rather than trying to retrofit a general-purpose system to meet your needs. Please contact us to discuss your project and learn what we can do for you.

Who we are

Hugh Poynor taught e-Commerce at the University of Texas at Austin for five years and has over 40 years in software development and management. Lee Poynor provides communication, content development, information flow, and graphic design for our projects.

What Web sites do

You may not be aware of how versatile the Web has become. It has created new forms of commerce that are causing the Web to evolve even further. Web alliances and partnerships have transformed sole-source business into a broader enterprise. Here are some ways the Web can help a company (or any other organization) today.

  • Heighten awareness of company and mission
  • Shape the company/product image
  • Influence opinion and distribute news
  • Enhance company/product loyalty
  • Describe services and how to obtain them
  • Increase brand, model, features, and size awareness
  • Provide information and referral among partners
  • Alert supply and manufacturing partners of your orders
  • Inform prospective customers of accurate manufacturing schedules
  • Provide an online sales revenue channel
  • Direct customers to nearby outlets for in-store shopping
  • Reach an audience for market research surveys
  • Create a platform for launching new products
  • Reduce expense of customer service
  • Increase services without increasing costs
  • Provide a clearinghouse for sharing common information
  • Gather information through online questionnaires
  • Administer tests
  • Entertain with music and videos

OppositeStrengths.com

Explore your own personal strengths and learn how to improve your business and personal relationships. The Opposite Strengths theory grew from the popular work of two organizational psychologists who have developed their theory over 40 years of consulting and training.

Participants in one- and two-day seminars use Opposite Strengths.com to complete questionnaires, network with other participants and colleagues, and to provide analysis and reporting. Seminar organizers use the site to enroll participants, monitor their networking activities, and print statistical reports for use during seminars. An expert system was written to generate personal and relationship reports. The site has an extensive database, credit card processing and sales analysis.

OppositStrengths.com came up second in the list in a Google search for "opposite strengths". Because there are usually hundreds of thousands of results listed, being top ranked greatly helps a site get noticed and brings traffic to the site.

JamesCarterStudio.com

James Carter is a goldsmith who specializes in cloisonné enameling. A skilled designer and artist, he produces custom one-of-a-kind gold and silver jewelry. He is a lifelong Floridian who now resides in the Florida panhandle.

No two pieces of James Carter's work are ever exactly alike. Each item is a carefully crafted work of art which draws upon his extraordinary skills in the techniques of casting, fabrication, diamond setting, gemstone setting, and cloisonné enameling.

All pieces are handmade in the studio. Each James Carter original bears a hallmark on the reverse side consisting of two stamped imprints. The first ("18 KT") documents the quality of the gold, and the second ("James Carter") identifies the artist.

HFpoa.com

This is the Web site of the Heron's Forest Property Owners Association. Heron's Forest is a community of 184 homes in southern Pensacola, Florida. Built beginning in 1998, the development has a five-acre nature conservancy, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and beautifully landscaped common areas.

The Web site includes: a custom search engine for seeking information on deed restrictions and community policies; timely community news; links and contact information for the property manager; archived material on topics of community interest (e.g., Hurricane Ivan in 2004); and an automated means of requesting supplies from the property manager. Residents contribute fresh content to "Chefs Corner," "Gardening notes," and "Business & Services" pages. The latter page helps residents find local vendors that have earned high regard by doing good work (painting, landscaping, computer repairs, and so forth) for other residents. A side effect of HFpoa.com is increased communication among neighbors.

Hugh, as a former Heron's owner and board member (and developer), we wanted so much and failed several times to get a community web and news network going. I have never, never seen anything close to the Pulitzer you have created. Keep up the great work. Regards, Dick Baker

HFpoa.com came up first in the list in a Google search for "Heron's Forest". Because there are usually hundreds of thousands of results listed, being top ranked greatly helps a site get noticed and brings traffic to the site.

ArborClub.com

The Arbor Club Apartments are located in central urban Pensacola. Prospective residents can see detailed floor plans and pricing, a list of amenities, photos, and a map to the property. They can also review information on renter qualifications and how to rent, and they can print rental applications and pet permits. Residents can use the Web to enter repair requests and make personal announcements (which are screened by staff). The site also offers a list of important area phone numbers and information on area schools and recycling centers.

Through the 'back-office' component of the Web site, the apartment manager is able to control much of the information which appears online (office hours, phone numbers, e-mail address, prices, deposits, fees, and availability of units). Management also screens announcements and controls a database housing repair requests.

ArborClub.com came up fourth in the list in a Google search for "Arbor Club". Because there are usually hundreds of thousands of results listed, being top ranked greatly helps a site get noticed and brings traffic to the site.

GaeasTears.com

Gaea's Tears is a novel by Morgan Law that defies placement in any one genre. Horror, suspense, sci-fi, occult, fantasy, and even romance 'readers' will all find themselves at home. The story is gripping, and the characters capture one's emotions. Avid readers of the spooky stuff with things that go bump in the night should definitely take a look.

GaeasTears.com allows visitors to read a brief description of the book, get a look at Alyson Hill's powerful cover design, and link either to Amazon.com or the publisher's direct Web site to order a copy of the book.

GaeasTears.com came up eighth in the list in a Google search for "gaea's tears". Because there are usually hundreds of thousands of results listed, being top ranked greatly helps a site get noticed and brings traffic to the site.

ClassAnytime.com/cis3312

This large, interactive Web site was developed by Dr. Hugh Poynor for teaching his upper-division college students to design and develop Web projects. Pedagogical innovations within the site, termed "active-learning pages," make the most of the Web's potential for providing colorful, lively learning activities and powerful information lookup.

The site contains 44 chapters (Web pages) averaging 3000 words each, 150 support pages, and 610 graphic images. Extensive navigational aides include a dedicated site search engine, a site map with 1290 hyperlinks into the site, and extensive pull-down menus.

Use of this Web site as the core teaching and learning tool supports teaching by providing clear topic outlines and working examples for lectures. Because students have built-in lecture notes available on the Web, they can pay closer attention during lectures. More important, the content is carefully structured to provide advanced organizers and opportunities for students to apply, reinforce, and integrate new material online with immediate, explicit feedback. A total of 104 active-learning checkpoints, 22 live tryouts for student markup, and 385 randomized multiple choice mastery questions (scored online) are embedded in the content. Enhancement of traditional instructional methods with the new Web technology increased teaching/learning efficiency so much that several topics could be added to the course.

ClassAnytime.com came up first in the list in a Google search for "class anytime". Because there are usually hundreds of thousands of results listed, being top ranked greatly helps a site get noticed and brings traffic to the site.

PensacolaShutters.com

This site supports a start up company that specializes in sales and installation of hurricane shutters. An objective of the site is to acquaint visitors with a revolutionary new form of protection: hurricane screens.

Visitors will be able to comparison shop for different methods of protection to meet their budget needs. The site was started in mid-April, 2006 and does not yet have a search engine presence.

ClassAnytime.com/mis333k

This site was constructed by Dr. Poynor to support his college course titled Introduction to Business Systems Development. (MIS 333k). This is a systems development class that uses Microsoft's Access database, Visual Basic, xhtml, and ASP. Because the course deals with advanced object oriented concepts, course work in database concepts and introductory programming are required prerequisites.

The extensive online reference materials (SQl syntax, DOA-ADO recordsets, combo & list box techniques, and lecture notes) attract traffic from all over the world to the site.

ClassAnytime.com/mis310

Developed by Dr. Poynor for use in his college course titled Introduction to Management Information Systems, this Web site provides students with an overview of the influence and strategic role of MIS technology on business. Key computer and information systems concepts are covered, and the most popular software tools currently available are described. Emphasis is placed on using technology to deliver business solutions.

Our office

Hosting

Our host is pair.com because of speed, reliability, security, success and support. They host over 190,000 Web sites and have run a profitable hosting enterprise for ten years. We have a developer hosting account and support all our sites on pair.com.

Software we use

Writing html pages, php scripts and MySQL queries is a routine task in our office. In other words, quite a bit of time is spent typing. TextPad is a programmers editor that we use. It supports html tagging, macros for repetitive tasks, floating block copy/move, sorting, bookmarks, search in unopened files and syntax highlighting.

This is a graphics editor and photo processor. Compared to PhotoShop it has fewer users but its strength is in repetitive tasks, ease of use and price.

PhotoShop Elements is the little brother of the pricey PhotoShop. It does most of the work of its sibling and fills in where PhotoImpact cannot.

This is the world's most popular database. MySQL is used in many of the world's largest companies. It may surprise you to learn it is also used in many of the world's smallest companies (and many in between). It is considered an open source product.

The language of databases is SQL. Since we subscribe to MySQL, it is essential to have a graphic user interface to perform SQL queries and updates in a friendly windows format. SQLyog is one of the most popular MySQL font-ends available.

In their infancy Web servers were used only to deliver html pages and graphics. Servers do much more today. The server-scripting language we use is PHP. It has the reputation of being the most popular scripting language on the Web. PHP is considered an open source product.

Adobe Acrobat bridges the need for document-quality formatting with Web access. Contracts, applications, instructions, maps and other information visitors will want to print can be preserved in an excellent format directly accessible from our Web pages.

Ipswitch makes a line of popular FTP clients for transferring Web pages, images, and other files to and from Web servers. WS_FTE is the tool we use to move work from our local development servers up to the remote public Web servers.
